Bookworm Club

Third grade students each year have the opportunity to participate in the Bookworm Club, a reading enrichment program that is intended to introduce third graders to a wide variety of fine children's literature. With the guidance of their teacher and the media specialist, students will choose a book from a  list of books that have been selected for the program. After reading the book and successfully completing a short quiz on the IMC computer, the child will be able to add a segment to the body of our third grade Bookworm, which will wend its way around the library. Although the cooperative nature of building the Bookworm is stressed, the children are also given a variety of incentives as they reach various levels. The program will run until the middle of June and the names of those students who read books worth 70 points over the course of the year will be inscribed on a plaque that is displayed in the IMC.

The reading level of the books ranges from second to sixth grade, so that students at all reading levels can participate comfortably in the program. Although participation is voluntary, I hope that you will encourage your child to take part. Children must, of course, take the quiz in school, but they might enjoy discussing their reading with you at home.

Several copies of each of the books are available at the school library. Most of the books can also be found at the Public Library, and many are available in inexpensive paperback editions at local bookstores. Students who intend to reach 70 points should be encouraged to work steadily over the school year, rather than try to catch up during the last month of the program, which might prove impossible.

I should appreciate any encouragement that you can give your children to read Bookworm Club books, as third grade can be a year of great growth in reading.
