Searching the Web

These are the search engines that Oradell students may use when searching for information from school.

 

 

KIDSCLICK!  A directory with an excellent collection of sites and a search engine to help you find any subject you need on the Web. Reading levels of sites are added to help guide you to information appropriate for your grade level. Nicely organized, kept up to date -- and no advertisements!

GREAT WEB SITES FOR KIDS  A searchable selection of Web sites for children, chosen by librarians, arranged according to subject and with grade level indicated. An excellent site for help with assignments and just to explore.

Reference Shelf

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other standard reference sources 

WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA  For use in school as well as at home, this is the online version of the World Book Encyclopedia. World Book Kids is suitable for younger elementary school students, while World Book Student is for older students. The online version includes all the information available in the print edition as well as links to many related magazine articles and Web sites.

BRITANNICA ONLINE  For use at school and home, this site includes access to Enyclopædia Britannica, Compton's Encyclopedia and Britannica Elementary. An excellent resource for students from elementary school through high school, the site also features links to journals and magazines and web sites.

CHILDREN'S MAGAZINE GUIDE The online version of the standard index to children's magazines, this site also provides links to appropriate web sites.

EBSCO MAGAZINE SEARCH A very useful index to periodical articles, this site includes many full-text articles. Once you get to the site, click on Searchasaurus (for younger students) or go to Ebscohost Web and then to Primary Search and/or Middle Search (for older students).

MERRIAM WEBSTER'S ONLINE DICTIONARY  The 10th edition of this excellent dictionary, including illustrations and tables, and linked to a thesaurus.

RHYMING DICTIONARY  A good place to visit when you want to compose a rhyming verse or two. Be sure to choose "double rhymes" for two or three syllable words or you might not get good rhymes!

FAMOUS QUOTATIONS A collection of famous historical quotations. 

HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS   Everything from the Mayflower Compact to Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech and presidential inaugural addresses. A fine source for primary materials for social studies.

Libraries and Librarians

Libraries and librarians are often the best source to get any information you may need. Here are four wonderful places to start:

BERGEN COUNTY COOPERATIVE LIBRARY SYSTEM  On the BCCLS home page you will find a list of all of the public libraries in Bergen county and some in Passaic, along with their hours of operation. Best of all, you can search the catalogs of all those libraries, including the Oradell Public Library's, by author, title, subject or key word, find out which library has a book you need, whether it is available, and even reserve it.

THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION'S GREAT WEB SITES FOR KIDS  A great selection of Web sites for children, chosen by librarians, arranged according to subject and with grade level indicated. An excellent site for help with assignments and just to explore.

THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY'S "ON-LION" FOR KIDS  The New York Public Library's site for children, including links to lists of recommended reading, sports, science and technology and magazines.

THE NEW YORK TIMES LEARNING NETWORK  An outstanding source for daily news and news summaries for students, teachers and parents.

TIME FOR KIDS  Includes special features from the current issues of Time for Kids and an archive of all previous issues.

SCHOLASTIC NEWS ONLINE A companion to the print edition of Scholastic News with up-to-date news.

FROM REVOLUTION TO RECONSTRUCTION Biographies of important historical figures in U.S. history, including Presidents.

NEW JERSEY  New Jersey's official web site, searchable by keyword.

UNITED STATES CONGRESS  Information about the U.S. Congress, including the Senate and House of Representatives.

PRESIDENTS  A list of all the presidents with links to sites containing information about them.

THE PRESIDENT'S CABINET   Current list of the members of the cabinet, as well as links to information about each of the Cabinet Departments 

UNITED STATES CENSUS BUREAU  A comprehensive resource covering a wide range of statistical information on American life, including an up to date population clock.

FACTS ABOUT THE UNITED STATES  Basic facts about all the states of the Union and Washington, D.C.

HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS   Everything from the Mayflower Compact to Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech and presidential inaugural addresses.

Facts about the World

POPULATION CLOCK  Shows the estimated population of the world and of the United States, along with a lot of other information about population growth.

THE WORLD CLOCK  Find our what time it is almost anywhere in the world.

RULERS OF THE WORLD Up-to-date lists of heads of state and heads of government of all currently existing countries and territories, going back to about 1700.  

THE WORLD FACTBOOK  The latest edition of the CIA Factbook, with information about all the countries of the world, including geography, people, government, economy, transportation, communications and defense forces.

FLAGS OF ALL COUNTRIES  Pictures of flags of all the countries of the world, as well as facts about the countries.

THE NINE 8 PLANETS   A multimedia tour of the solar system, with facts about the sun, the planets and their moons.

ENCHANTED LEARNING This is a site you can use with your students, as well as for finding good lesson plan ideas, crafts, etc.

ERIC  Click on EBSCOHost Web, then scroll down to ERIC. A wonderful professional resource, the Educational Resource Information Center provides access to literature and resouces in the field of education. the database provides access to articles from many journals with full text of more than 2,200 digests.

NOVELIST K-8 A valuable resource for language arts, this site includes summaries, reviews, lists, anrticles and additional resources for fiction for children of all ages. Log into ERIC, then scroll down to NoveList

TEACHING BOOKS A terrific resource for planning and for sharing with students, Teaching books includes original videos of authors and illustrators discussing their work, authors reading their books. books guides, lesson plans, thematic booklists and many valuable links.
