Fifth Grade Newbery Scholars

Fourth, fifth and sixth graders have the opportunity to participate in a reading enrichment program called the Newbery Scholars program. The Newbery Medal is an award given annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Fifth grade students will be reading books chosen from a  selected list of Newbery award winners and honor books. They must then pass a short quiz about the book on one of the IMC's computers. For each ten points earned, the student will receive a Newbery Badge. In order to become a Newbery Scholar, the student must earn a certain number of points. At the end of the school year, all Newbery Scholars will receive certificates of achievement and their names will be added to the Newbery plaque, which is on display outside the Instructional Media Center. The achievement of those students who become Newbery Scholars in fourth, fifth and sixth grades will be specially recognized at the awards ceremony in June of their graduation year.

The Newbery Scholars program is intended to introduce upper elementary students to a wide variety of fine children's literature and to develop literature skills and understanding. Works of literature play an important part in the children's reading programs, and although participation in the Newbery Scholar program is entirely voluntary, I hope that you will encourage your child to take part.

The Newbery Award and Honor books that are included in this year's program are available in the school library as well as at the Oradell Public Library. In addition, many of these books are available in inexpensive paperback editions and would make good additions to a home library.
