StarSecond Grade Reading Stars Star

Second graders have the opportunity to take part in Reading Stars, a reading enrichment program intended to encourage children to read for pleasure. Each child has a chance to contribute stars that will decorate the walls of the Media Center. In order to earn stars students must spend time reading or being read to at home. The children will be awarded a variety of stars and certificates as they read over the year. A special certificate will be awarded to each child who reads for a total of 100 hours during the year. Students should keep track of their reading on a reading log, which must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the Media Center when each line has been filled in. Time spent reading in school should not be included in the log. Reading logs are available to the children in the library.

I hope that you will encourage your child to participate in this program. Second grade is a crucial year in the development of children who will continue to read for pleasure throughout their lives. It is often the year that children decide for themselves whether reading is a real chore or a real pleasure. Their teachers and I will be suggesting good books for the children to take home to read. We hope not only that your second grader will gain more independence in reading, but also that he or she will come to think of reading and being read to as a choice leisure time activity.
